The journey started when the pair of homebred lambs weighing a combined 91kg from Brecon-based Chrissy Davies, stood top of the line up in the Blue Texel class. It was an extremely strong class with 16 pairs out for show and the biggest class of the continental section. It’s the third time Chrissy has won this class, previously winning in 2021 and 2022.

The pair then went on to win the pure continental championship before being tapped out as the overall supreme pair.
The lambs were then sold for £720 per head, or 15.82p/kg to butchers, T and A Hughes, of Anglesey.
The Blue Texel Sale section averaged £320 per head, or 7.45p/kg
Commenting on his win, Chrissy said: “Winning the Blue Texel class was amazing, but winning the overall is something I could only have dreamed of.”

Tom Hughes, Farm Shop, Rhydeilian, Llanfairpwll, Anglesey.
Tom was intending to buy the champion carcasses but said that when he saw the Blue Texels he thought they were the best pair of lambs he’d ever seen and knew he had to purchase them. He also said: ‘I enjoy the prestige of having the champions.’ The deadweight was 60kg total for the pair of lambs both grading at E3L.”

Tom has had the farm shop for 22 years. He previously had a shop in the village which didn’t have parking so moved it to the farm, where he has ample parking. Subsequently, his sales improved dramatically. He has bought past champions, among them the beef champion animal in 2008. He also judged the live lambs in 2018 and bought the champions and reserve champions. In addition, he’s bought the pig champions for the last five years. “I like to have the best quality in the shop over the Christmas period as a thank you to his loyal customers.”
